McHale and Birmingham Medals for Academic Excellence!

ST. JARLATH’S COLLEGE – ACADEMIC AWARDS

MCHALE MEDAL – FOR FIRST PLACE IN THE LEAVING CERTIFICATE. NAMED IN MEMORY OF MOST REV. JOHN MCHALE (1789 -1881), ARCHBISHOP OF TUAM, PATRON OF ST. JARLATH’S, SCHOLAR, WRITER, ORATOR, PATRIOT AND FRIEND OF DANIEL O’CONNELL. HIS STATUE BY SIR THOMAS FARRELL IS IN FRONT OF THE CATHEDRAL.

Winner this year is Shane McGagh.

BIRMINGHAM MEDAL – FOR FIRST PLACE IN THE JUNIOR CERTIFICATE. NAMED IN MEMORY OF JOHN BIRMINGHAM (1816-1884), MILLBROOK, MILLTOWN, CO. GALWAY, DISTINGUISHED ASTRONOMER AND PAST PUPIL WHOSE TELESCOPE WAS LEFT TO THE COLLEGE AND IS PRESENTLY IN THE CARE OF THE MILLTOWN MUSEUM.

Winner this year is Shaun Finan.
