Tuam Diocesan Youth Council

Tuam Diocesan Youth Council was set up in January 2008 as a result of the diocesan assembly which outlined the need for a diocesan youth team that would provide opportunities for young people to develop and nurture their faith. The Diocesan Youth Councils mission statement sums up their vision for the future:

Tuam Diocesan Youth Council is inspired by Jesus' special love of and care for young people. It seeks to help young people to live as followers of Jesus and to take an active role in the life and ministry of our Church. Tuam Diocesan Youth Council endeavours to ensure that all young people from our diocese be offered opportunities to experience, live, explore and celebrate their faith in meaningful ways. It does this by supporting and resourcing faith centred events at diocesan and parish level.

"Your Church - Your Turn"

On June 21st, 2008 the Diocesan Youth Council held their first event in Ballintubber Abbey. A Mass and BBQ was held at 10.00 p.m. The event was very successful and a great crowd took part. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Sean Cunningham and he was assisted by Fr. Tod Nolan. Ballinrobe Folk Choir provided music to accompany the liturgy and afterwards people gathered around a bonfire and enjoyed the BBQ.

The DYC also plans to organise a walk every Christmas. Please keep and eye on local press and parish newsletters for more information closer to the time.

Committee: Cliona Feerick, Ballinrobe (Chairperson), Peter Mannion, Tuam (Assistant Chairperson), Fr. Seán Cunningham, Tuam (Secretary), Sinéad McManus, Westport, Fr. Tod Nolan, Tuam, Kevin Concannon, Knock, Kate Costello, Abbeyknockmoy, Trish O'Brien, Kilmaine, Aisling McDonagh, Athenry, Ray McGrath, Dunmore, Stephen Bushell, Corofin.

Liturgy Log - Pause to Prepare

In preparation for the celebration of the Advent, a series of preparation evenings for liturgy groups are being hosted by five parishes on the following dates in November; Tuam 13th, Knock 17th, Westport 18th, Ballinrobe 19th and Clifden 20th.The Diocesan  Implementaion Body has undertaken this initiative and it  will be facilitated by Mary Connolly (Diocesesan Liturgical Resource Person). It's purpose is twofold: firstly, to provide people with an opportunity of praying with others in the weeks before Christmas and secondly,to give those interested in liturgical formation a chance to discover the kind of preparation necessary for public prayer gatherings and liturgical celebration. Any parish in the diocese wishing to provide  a weekly opportunity for prayer based on the Advent scripture readings for this year  (B) is welcome to avail of the support outlined. May it be a time of blessing "as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Saviour Jesus Christ".

House of Prayer - Achill

Many calls and letters have come to the Diocesan Office regarding the work termed the “House of Prayer” in Achill, Co. Mayo. The Archbishop originally issued two public statements in this regard, in December 1997 and July 1998 respectively.  These are included on the link below.  While wishing to entirely respect the reputations of all involved, the Archdiocese cannot but recall that sincere and well-ordered attempts on the part of the diocesan authorities to integrate this work into the life of the local church here met with a disappointing lack of success.  Accordingly, while welcoming any and all sincere attempts to promote orthodox Catholic faith and piety, the Archdiocese cannot lend its approval to this work as matters stand and is obliged to note that the same work is entirely of a private nature and carries no ecclesiastical approval whatever.  The Archbishop would call on all persons of good will involved in the situation to reflect on what is best for the Church at large and to exercise the greatest responsibility and charity in the matter.

Mass in Cahernacole (Cong/The Neale, Co. Mayo)- Sunday August 31st, 2008

When the ancient churches of Ballinchala & Kilmolora were destroyed, Mass was celebrated at various secret locations.  Mass was usually celebrated at secret station houses or in the open air in hollows or mass rocks, the principle being the Mass rock and later the Mass house at Cahernacole.
The Silver chalice which was used in the celebration of the Mass on Sunday last was used in successive churches in the Neale since Penal days. It was used at the Cahernacole Mass house from 1720 - 1770. It was used at the subsequent thatched church from 1770-1786 and in the present church in the Neale from 1876 to sometime in the 1950's. It was then in a poor state of repair and was handed into Archbishop Walshe who had it replated and restored. Since then it is in safe keeping in Tuam.

Photo shows the congregation that assembled at the Penal Day Mass house at Cahernacole, The Neale for celebration of Mass on Sunday, August 30th 2008. The celebrant was Fr Stephen Farragher, a native of the parish. He is holding the chalice that was used for celebration of Mass in the Mass House from 1720 -1770.

The village of Killererin was en fete for the occasion and it was a trememdous community occasion with great cooperation from every angle. The ordination was at 2.30 and the ceremony was concelebrated by around 60 priests. The reception afterwards was in the local Community Centre and on then to the Claregalway Hotel. On Monday Patrick celebrated his first Mass which again was a wonderful community occasion. Again a reception was held in the community centre after Patrick imparted his first blessing on the very large congregation. Congratulations to all involved, choir, pastoral council, community council, stewarts and the many, many people that made it such a special occasion. We wish God's blessing on Patrick for his future ministry in the Archdiocese.
